Kinja'd!!!

Went to help get my car back from the bodyshop today. The guy loaded it on his wrecker pulled out of his parking lot and my car fell off. The shop owner's laborers didn't attach the tow bars properly to my front wheels so when the wrecker turned to go on the street the bars fell off and the frontal weight of my car was supported by the fenders and front bumper. Yeah...

Kinja'd!!!

Got home and I wanted to test fit my hood. It won't fit. My shaker scoop sits up too high because of a square bore to spread bore adapter that was required to make my edelbrock. My only option looks to be buying a rebuilt Pontiac Quadrajet (anyone have one they are willing to sell?) and a new 700r4 TV cable bracket (had to modify my first one to fit the edelbrock). The shaker scoop itself won't fit the carb because of the fuel inlet location.

Kinja'd!!!

I also compared the stock radiator to my new aluminum radiator I got for Christmas and the new radiator is 5" too thin. Looks like I'll be finding a new new radiator.

Anyways, thus is the life of a poor man trying to restore his first car.

Does it have to be Edelbrock? (As my friend says, Edelcokblok) Maybe look at a Holley?

I used the edelbrock becuase it was my only carb. I'm open to any suggestions that fit under my shaker scoop (preferably spread bore so I don't have to use a spacer). I've been looking at a spread bore Hollies but I have no clue what to look for in a carb.

D: Unfortunately, I have zero knowledge of carbs other than stories from my friends experiences. Apparently Holley has an interactive carb selector!

The engine is stock right? You don't really need a performance carb, it won't make any difference in power. You can get a Holley Quadrajet replacement that will work just fine.

It's a close to stock 400. It has a more aggressive cam in it (Comp cams XE-268, close to a Ram Air III grind), headers, and slightly better heads (6x instead of 4x).

It's not mine, it's my father's so you would have to talk it up with him. I want it gone so I can have another car in the garage :D

Fuckin D-bags. First they sit on your car then decide NOT to work on it, then they drop it off the tow truck YOU had to pay for?

Did you still have to pay for it?

Any damage?

I'll sell you my fiberglass cowl hood, it'll fit over that carb. :P

Yeah, I really have no business with another project. I have a 78 and being British, it is a never ending project.

I made the shop owner pay for it. With the cowl I would lose my shaker :( Do you think this carb would work for me? http://www.ebay.com/itm/Rebuilt-Ro…

QuadraJets seem to be the way to go under the Shaker.
Edelbrock has owned the Q for years now and have made dealing with them easy.

Did they screw the fenders or bumper mounts/shocks up?

Looks like that's my best option after all. Ever dealt with these guys? http://www.nationalcarburetors.com/lookup.aspx?pa… I just need a decent (pre-emission crazy) qjet to hold me over till I can buy a nice one or have one professionally rebuilt. I have a '78 qjet that needs a major rebuild but I'd rather not learn on a carb that will need to be decently reliable.

I don't think so, the undercarriage needs some paint but that's all I could see. I didn't bolt the fenders on the bottom so the metal just bowed out and formed back into shape. Luckily they didn't crease, I spent months looking for a rust free passenger fender. I'm pretty sure the shocks are okay, eventually I want to lower the car an inch anyways.

Ahh man, I don't know what to say other than that you truly are an unlucky person and we all suffer with you.

I do in fact have a working q-jet lying around, but I suspect shipping it from Sweden would be more hassle than it's worth.

However! You still have a stock cast iron intake, right? Why not upgrade to an edelbrock aluminum intake? The preformer is about the same height as an original intake but you won't have to use the adapter since I'm pretty sure most of them are spread bores. Finding a used one shouldn't really run you back more than getting a new carb + you'll gain more hp and loose some weight. It's a win win situation!

I never worked with those guys.
I used to deal with Airflow Research in Chicago (out of business) or A&G in Oak Park, Il (shocked it's still there!).
I've heard good stuff about Cliffs.
Anything is better than the Edelbrock/Carter carb.

Ha, absolutely! An aluminum intake is on the list of stuff I want to add in the future. How's your bird doing? Fix that fuel problem from a while back?

Yeah yeah it's all good, however it's in storage right now with the snow and all that. The fuel problem turned out to be that the new fuel pump I bought was faulty. After another one it worked nicely again.

Currently I'm building a 389 for it. Gonna take it to a machine shop next week to have it bored up to a 400 and have all the cam bearings replaced and some other small things.

What engine? Would a used aluminum intake be easier/cheaper? They don't really wear out so as long as it isn't damaged it should be fine.

Pontiac 400. The problem with that is finding an aftermarket square bore intake that also clears the hood.

Seriously—the car got damaged as a direct result of the shop's negligence, and you shouldn't have to pay for it.

Go out for blood. File claims. Lawyer up if need be.

"You're not going to learn any younger."

An old saying, but it still rings true.

Buy you a book or two on rebuilding and modifying quadrajet carbs and have at it.

I did my first complete carb rebuild at around 14-15 years old and it worked out just fine.

P.S. I commend you on doing it all and paying for it yourself. You have qualities that are too often non existent in a lot of today's young men and I think they will serve you well in the years to come. Best of luck to you.
